HOW TO CHECK TIRE TREAD DEPTH WITH A PENNY

WHAT IS TIRE TREAD DEPTH?

The tread on your tires is what provides traction on the road every time you speed up, slow down, and turn. And just like with a good pair of shoes, your car needs tread with the right amount of depth to keep traction. But what exactly is tread depth? Take a closer look at your tire and you’ll see a pattern of ridges all along its outer edge. Tread depth is the measure of space between the top of a tire’s rubber ridge to the bottom of its deepest groove.

WHY DOES TREAD DEPTH MATTER?

The condition of a tire’s treads can directly impact a vehicle’s performance, traction, and responsiveness. Less tread depth means more trouble with:

  • Grip and control moving on the road
  • Difficulty slowing down resulting in increased stopping distances
  • Higher risk for hydroplaning on wet surfaces
WHEN TO TEST YOUR VEHICLE’S TREAD DEPTH

WHEN TO TEST YOUR VEHICLE’S TREAD DEPTH

It's smart to keep tabs on your tire tread to catch wear and tear early. The most common recommendation is to check in at least once a month or every time you refuel your vehicle. Keeping up with preventative maintenance, like scheduling regular alignments, getting your tires rotated, and keeping tires properly inflated can help extend the tread life of your tires. Still, over time your tire tread will eventually wear out. Here are some warning signs of worn out tire tread to watch out for:

  • Visible tread wear bars: Check the tread wear indicator bars in between tread grooves. If the ridges of the tread are even with the bar it’s time to replace.
  • Bulges and cracks: Cuts and cracks in the tire sidewall are more likely to appear on older, worn tires. Make sure to visually inspect tires often to catch signs of damage early.
  • Uneven wear: Uneven tire wear is sometimes an indicator of other maintenance issues with your vehicle. Wear on the outer edge of a tire could mean your vehicle is out of alignment. Centered wear patterns could mean your tires are overinflated.

DIDN’T PASS THE PENNY TEST? IT MAY BE TIME FOR NEW TIRES.

What’s the lowest you can go? If your tire tread is below 2/32 of an inch it's time for new tires because it's both unsafe and, in many places, illegal to keep driving on them. Swing by Tires Plus where you can check out a great selection of top tire brands and find the perfect match for your car. The experts at Tires Plus are always ready to help with a quick inspection or tire installation, making sure you're back on the road safely in no time.
